Commercial Softener
Commercial Softener remove hardness (calcium and manganese) from the water supply. The practical limit for compensated hardness is 100 grains per gallon (gpg). If the hardness level is above 70 gpg then two softeners in series must be used to remove all the hardness. Hardness leakage from a Commercial Softener is directly proportional to the TDS (total dissolved solids) level in the raw water and the salt dosage used for regeneration. Softeners can remove 0.5 ppm of clear water iron (ferric iron) for each grain per gallon of harness in the water, up to a limit of 10 ppm; if a 6.7 or higher pH is present and the water is not aerated.
The capacity of a Commercial Softener is determined by the amount of salt (brine) used for regeneration. The chart below provides this relationship.

Soft water is defined by the American Agricultural Society of Engineers (S-369) and the Water Quality Association (WQA) as water containing less than 1.0 grain per gallon of hardness.
